The State Research Center, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise, the I.P. Bardin Central Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy (TsNIIchermet) is a leading research center in the ferrous metallurgy industry, operating since 1944. The Institute has developed key metallurgical technologies, including the use of oxygen in steelmaking, continuous steel casting and others. Thanks to the Institute's achievements, sub-sectors of Russian metallurgy have been established: powder metallurgy, precision alloy and special steel metallurgy, and ferroalloys. Scientists at the I.P. Bardin Central Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy have developed 500 grades of steel and alloys and 300 precision alloys. The Institute holds 74 patents for inventions and 5,500 technical specifications. At the country's largest enterprises, the Institute addresses issues related to the technical re-equipment of production facilities, the improvement of the quality and competitiveness of metal products, and develops metallurgical production processes. It determines the quality of metal products, the physical and physicochemical properties of products and materials, and conducts chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and metallographic studies. Since 1995, the Institute has had the official status of a State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation; since February 9, 2005, it has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
