Hafnium metal
Chief Marketing and Analytics Specialist for Advanced Products at Rosatom Metallurgical Technologies LLC
Moscow, Russia
About
Hafnium metal of high purity, obtained by the method of iodide refining. This process makes it possible to obtain metal with a minimum content of impurities. The material is supplied in the form of crystal rods.
It is used in special metallurgy as an alloying additive in the creation of heat-resistant and particularly durable alloys for aerospace engineering. The addition of hafnium significantly increases the heat resistance and adhesion of protective oxide layers on nickel superalloys used in turbine blades.
It is also used in the production of targets for ion plasma spraying, as well as in X-ray optics and microelectronics.
The key physical feature of hafnium is its high thermal neutron capture cross section. This property makes it practically indispensable in the nuclear power industry.
